- I Spy. I spy is the classic game for the car that almost everyone knows! But that doesn’t mean it isn’t still fun. It can be a great game to play with school-aged kids who are learning their letters and spelling, but you can also adjust the game to suit little kids by using colours instead of letters.
- The Alphabet Game (Also Known As Alphabet Soup) This is our favourite car game to play as a family. We have a lot of laughs at some of the more obscure answers if someone gets stuck (and do help each other out if we have extra answers).
- Sorry I’m Late. This game is definitely better suited to older kids, teens and adults who have seen a lot of different movies. If playing with kids, it also helps to keep your answers suited to movies you know they have seen.
- Who Am I? This is another great option for games to play in the car that can be adjusted to suit younger players, keeping it within their knowledge base but can be a real good challenge when playing with teens and adults.
- Name the Artist. The first person to name the artist or group when a song comes on the radio gets a point. Keep playing until you reach your destination and whoever has the most points at arrival, wins.
- The License Plate Game. The goal is to spot as many license plates from different states as you can. Whoever sees a plate first and calls it gets to color it in on their map.
- The Grocery Game. Choose your first player and ask them to think of an item you can purchase at the grocery store. Everyone else in the car takes turns guessing what it might be by asking a question.
- What Color is It? Have the adults in the family list a bunch of things that are the same color. For example, they may say “fire engines, apples, stop signs…” They should keep going until the kids yell out, “Red!”

- One-Sentence Story. For this game, you will tell a story one sentence at a time. The catch is each person on the road trip takes a turn adding a sentence until the story is done.
- Hangman. Bring a notebook along on your trip so you can play hangman. Each person takes a turn coming up with a word. Once you have a word, draw a blank for every letter in it on the paper.
- Hum The Tune. You don’t have to be able to sing well to play this game. Each player takes a turn humming the chorus of a song and then if another player knows what it is, they can join in and start humming with you.
