His music for The Way Back propels Gavin O’Connor’s latest film about a former high school basketball star (played superbly by Ben Affleck) dealing with alcoholism and asked by his alma mater to return to coach the team.

We talk a lot about how he developed the score for The Whale, especially in comparison to the notable silence that’s a part of it as well. Considering how great the music always is in an Aronofsky work, it’s no great surprise that Simonsen’s work here is my favorite film score of the year.
