When the Rochester Patent was conveyed in 1703, what is now the Town of Rochester had a population of 334. These early settlers, mostly Dutch, lived on farms they had laid out, and corn (grist) mills and saw mills were up and running, powered by the local streams. The crops raised by these settlers were mostly for family consumption.
