Aug 11, 2008 · Four major labels dominate the recording industry and Sony BMG has been one of them. But until now, Sony has controlled only half of the company. The other half was owned by Germany's Bertelsmann, which brought the historic RCA Records catalogue to the party, among other things.
Sony BMG Music Entertainment was an American record company owned as a 50–50 joint venture between Sony Corporation of America and Bertelsmann. The venture's successor, the revived Sony Music, is wholly owned by Sony, following their buyout of the remaining 50% held by Bertelsmann.

The ‘new’ BMG, led by CEO Hartwig Masuch, emerged following Bertelsmann’s decision to sell off its 50% stake in Sony-BMG to Sony Corp for $1.2 billion in August 2008. That saw BMG let go of a hugely influential (and valuable cataog), and start again from scratch across both recorded music and music publishing.
In 2008, Bertelsmann sold its 50% share of Sony BMG to Sony Corporation of America for a total of $1.5 billion and the company was renamed back to Sony Music Entertainment Inc.
