- Rey. – As revealed by The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (via Slashfilm), Johnson’s movie used many of the concepts Lucas first had in mind for Episode VII, specifically the story of an older, broken Luke training a young, Force-sensitive disciple named Kira (later renamed “Rey”).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is packed with Easter eggs, cameos, and references to all kinds of things from that galaxy far, far away. Here’s everything we found.
Warning: beware of spoilers!
When Rey hands Luke his lightsaber, if you look closely at the back of his mechanical hand, it still has the same burn scar from when it was shot by a blaster bolt during the fight above the Sarlacc pit at the beginning of Return of the Jedi.
R2-D2’s Leia message from A New Hope is hardly hidden but it’s obviously a callback, and a clever way to entice Luke back into the fight against the First Order. After all, it worked the first time.
We see Leia dressed in white with her head covered and firing her blaster on Poe in stun mode, which is reminiscent of her firing on the Stormtroopers (and them stunning her) in A New Hope.
During Luke’s Force illusion, he says he'll never leave Kylo Ren if he strikes him down, calling back to what Obi-Wan Kenobi told Darth Vader during their duel in A New Hope.
Han Solo’s golden dice were originally seen in A New Hope (if you look super close in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon). Even though you can’t see them in The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi, we’re assuming they were still there because they are back in The Force Awakens. Originally they were real dice painted gold, but for The Last Jedi they were redesigned to look more “Star Warsy” with symbols similar to those seen in use on Canto Bight.
During Luke’s final moments, he sees two setting suns, a direct visual callback to the binary sunset on Tatooine when his journey first began.
Also, the Force-sensitive kid at the end looks up at the stars the same way a young Luke once looked off into that sunset, wistfully imagining a life full of adventure beyond his meager beginnings.
The battle of Crait bears a lot of resemblance to the battle of Hoth from Empire Strikes Back. There are bad guys using walkers to assault a base on a planet with a white surface as the good guys use speeders to hold them off while everyone escapes.
When the horse-like Fathiers stampede through the Canto Bight casino, the liquid in a glass on the table ripples from their footsteps the same way the cup of water ripples when the T-Rex is approaching in Jurassic Park. (Actress Laura Dern, who played Vice Admiral Holdo, starred in Jurassic Park as Dr. Ellie Sattler.)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sets up the hyperspace tracking tech the First Order uses to track the Resistance fleet. When Jyn Erso is searching for the Death Star plans inside the facility on Scarif, she lists the file names out loud, one being "Hyperspace tracking." We can assume that the Empire began researching hyperspace tracking during this time, and then the research was passed on to the First Order, which eventually figured it out and put it into use in The Last Jedi.
Voiced and puppeteered by Frank Oz, Yoda is once again a puppet just like the one used in the original trilogy. Lucasfilm creature supervisor Neal Scanlan went as far as recreating the puppet from the original molds to get it just right. They even had the eyes painted by the same woman who did the original.
There's a connection to Star Wars: Battlefront II, so beware of spoilers for that game! During the Luke section of the campaign, Luke recovers a compass the size of a hockey puck. This compass supposedly helped lead him to the first Jedi temple on Ahch-To, and it can be glimpsed inside Luke's hut on a table among his other possessions.
Also in Luke's hut is a necklace with a red crystal. Some initially thought this was the kyber crystal from Darth Vader's lightsaber, and while it is indeed the crystal from a Sith lightsaber, the Visual Dictionary for the movie identifies it as a "recovered Jedi Crusader pendant." In Luke's search for the first Jedi temple he came across many ancient relics, and this was one of them. The term Jedi Crusader comes from the Knights of the Old Republic, an era 4,000 years before the Skywalker saga began (that is no longer canon and falls under the Legends banner), specifically referring to the "Revanchists" or followers of rogue-Jedi-turned-Sith-Lord Revan. They were called crusaders because they defied the Jedi Council and followed Revan into the Mandalorian Wars. However, this doesn't mean that Revan is now canon; more likely this was the Lucasfilm Story Group taking cool elements from Legends stories and including them piecemeal into the new canon.
- GOLDEN DICE. This is the trickiest of Easter Eggs, in the sense that this is an almost unheard of reverse Easter Egg! A reverse Easter Egg is when an item plays a notable role in a later movie while it made only the briefest of appearances in the previous films.
- GARY THE DOG. The scenes in Canto Bight, the casino planet in The Last Jedi, will undoubtedly be major sources of joy in the future when fans get the chance to freeze more scenes set at the casino.
- SNOKE'S RING. Good images of the Supreme Leader Snoke were very difficult to find for quite a long time. That is why, when he got a new toy ahead of The Last Jedi, fans were clamoring for more information about the distinct ring that he wore, as there is little doubt that the ring was not spotlighted on the toy for no reason.
- IN HONOR OF RADDUS. In Rogue One, the heroes of the Rebellion who get the plans for the Death Star are mostly left unprotected, as their mission was very much "off the books."
