Nowy Korczyn developed from the site of the right bank of River Nida, now occupied by the village of Stary Korczyn. Its origins go back to an early Piast stronghold which was also a seat of the prince"s court in the 11th century.
To distinguish it from the nearby village of Korczyn (now known as Stary Korczyn, Old Korczyn), Prince Boleslaus V the Chaste named the town Nowe Miasto Korczyn (New Town Korczyn), when he granted it Magdeburg rights (1258).

Today, Stary Korczyn remains in the shadow of the city less than 5 kilometers away. However, his pedigree is much older than that of his sister town. According to sources, there was a parish in Stary Korczyn as early as in the 12th century. A new, brick church was founded here in the 14th century by Kazimierz the Great.
