It's hard to reimagine a classic property, yet it's been a theme of 2019. The newest attempt is this charmingly animated adaptation of The Addams Family, which seems like a pretty hard sell after both the iconic TV series and two Barry Sonnenfeld films. Luckily, by some sort of Halloween miracle, this iteration of the spooky and kooky family is a totally wonderful addition to the popular franchise that both updates it for a new audience whilst balancing that with an impressive grasp of what made the previous iterations so beloved.

Opening with an introduction to Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) as they try to get married only to be chased away by pitchfork-wielding locals, The Addams Family works as a perfect jumping on point for new viewers. This passionate and healthy -- if completely strange -- relationship has always been at the heart of the Addams Family and it works wonderfully here.

Isaac is at his finest as the loving lothario and Theron is channeling her best Anjelica Huston as his (never) blushing bride. Before the title credits have finished rolling they've been joined by their odd offspring Pugsley (Finn Wolfhard) and Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz), and as we see through a series of very silly family portraits the Addams Family is complete. The core cast is joined by an extensive and impressive supporting voice cast including Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, Catherine O'Hara, Elsie Fisher, Snoop Dogg, Martin Short, Jennifer Lewis, and Tituss Burgess.

Like any good kids movie, The Addams Family also has a sweet message at its center, which focuses on the importance of being yourself and not going along with other people just because it seems like the popular or cool thing to do. Though it might sound corny or like you've seen it before -- which you undoubtedly have -- it's done well here and doesn't feel too on the nose or annoying, never taking away from the gross yet lovely comedy stylings of the family at its core. Just like the titular clan, this film was an underdog; at first look, an unusual and not particularly pretty thing that is in reality a completely charming story about family, horror, and greed.

If you're worried that the kids-centric animated format means the family won't be up to their usual violent antics, there's no need. The film is filled with horror homages, torture, guillotines, electric chairs, and massive explosions. In fact, something that becomes really clear from the first act is that the film being animated actually works in its favor when it comes to creating totally outrageous, dangerous, and potentially fatal stunts that are more often than not directed towards the Addams children.

Frighteningly funny and fresh, this hilarious animated treat will introduce a whole new generation to the loving and strange family whilst also pleasing those who grew up with the iconic '90s movies. With a sweet story, tight runtime, and impressive animation, this is the perfect Halloween treat for film fans young and old!
