By time of the events of the first film, only Jen and Kira had survived one such massacre as the former seeks to fulfill the prophecy. At the end of the first film, the two are entrusted with the Crystal by the urSkeks. In the original film, it required four puppeteers to operate the Gelfling.
It is only in that moment that Jen and Kira truly understood the Prophecy; they must take the True Shard to the Castle before the Great Conjunction and heal the Dark Crystal.
On another planet in the distant past, a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal and restore order to his world, before the grotesque race of Skeksis find and use the crystal for evil.
