In Italy, early in the 17th century, Spanish soldiers attempt to plunder the property of nobleman Gian Paolo Osio. Osio kills the Spanish leader and seeks refuge with Father Arrigone, who arranges with his secret mistress, Virginia de Leyva, prioress of the Convent of Santa Margherita at Monza, for Osio's protection.
