Edmund, the ephemeral Earl of Carrick, the succession of the 12th century Chief Butlership would fall to the Dun boyne branch. Their ancestor was Thomas Butler, third son of the 4th Chief Butler. His wife was Synolda, daughter and heiress of William le Petit, 6th Lord Dunboyne. The barony could be shown to have dated from at least 1207.

He married Ellen, daughter of Walter Butler (qv), 11th earl of Ormond, and lived at Lismallon, owning extensive properties in the baronies of Ikerrin, Eliogarty, Slieverdagh and Campey, and Lower Ormond. Butler was created Viscount Ikerrin in May 1629.
