Franklin taught in several Boston, Cambridge, and Philadelphia public schools and colleges before receiving his Ph.D. degree. He then joined the faculty of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign before being hired as a professor of the history of education at Yale University in 1977.
V.P. Franklin is a distinguished Professor of History and Education at the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Franklin is the editor of the Journal of African American History. He is the author of The Education of Black Philadelphia: The Social and Educational History of a Minority Community, 1900-1950.
