Since 1945 it has been the seat of Prague City Hall, Prague City Council, Prague City Assembly and the Mayor of Prague. The building contains offices, meeting halls and formal residences for the mayor and other city officials. History. The hall stands on Virgin Mary Square. This was the site of a Romanesque church until 1798.
The Old Town Hall was established in 1338 as the seat of the Old Town administration. The oldest part of the complex consists of the southern wing a beautiful Gothic tower with a bay chapel and a unique astronomical clock – known as the Orloj – where, every hour between 9 am and 11 pm, the twelve apostles appear.
There was a box-office assembly hall on the first floor with a surface area of 568 m2, second largest in Prague after the Main Post Office in Jindřišská Street.
