- Surround yourself with a brilliant team. Writing comics is very much a group effort. Anyone who knows how to write a comic book can tell you that it’s a collaborative process.
- Trust your collaborators. Comics are an inherently collaborative art form, and a lot of people’s opinions and time schedules will be involved. Unless you plan to execute literally every part of the process yourself—from writing the full script to illustrating and inking to self-publishing—you will need to team up with others and respect their input.
- Understand basic story structure. Audiences expect the same elements from a comic script that they would expect from a traditional book, movie, or narrative podcast.
- Plan a story that can be serialized. A comic book author must be mindful of the ways that the comic book script format differs from other narrative forms.
1. Brainstorm story ideas for your chosen comic book format. First, brainstorm ideas for the story you want to tell through your comic book. What is your main theme? What problem or conflict do you want to introduce and solve? Are you leaning towards Marvel-type superhero stories, or manga, or maybe a graphic novel? 2. Work with a great team.
- Know Your Ending. Last things first: know how your story ends before you even start writing. This is a lesson we learned from films; the great Francis Ford Coppola always had to know the ending of his stories because he had to know how to get there.
- Keep 'em Coming Back For More. The last page of each individual issue should always pack an emotional punch. Now I’m not saying you have to be M. Night Shyamalan with a mind-blowing reveal at the end of each issue for shock’s sake.
- Consider The Page Turns. Use the comic book page format to your full advantage. Every “turn” occurs on odd number pages. Just a rule to remember: Odd number pages are set ups and even number pages are reveals.
- Give Your Audience An Entry Point. Comics are great for writers who are creating entirely different worlds with imaginative lore. A fantasy world of elves, fairies, and witches with their own languages and rituals or a galaxy beyond our imagination that is faithful to advanced scientific principles are stories that are not hindered by the comic medium of inks and colors.
- Focus your ideas into a hook that pops. While you may already have loads of compelling ideas, characters, and settings, it’s wise to look ahead and see how you can capture interest with your comic book.
- Choose the format your story needs (or the one it deserves) How you choose to publish your book will affect how you write and illustrate it, so make sure you pick the right format.
- Draft a punchy script, not a novel with pictures. Comics are, above all, a visual medium and most comic scripts reflect this. They are blueprints written for an audience of one: the illustrator.
- Team up or go solo for the artwork. It's the moment you’ve been waiting for: bringing your comic book to life with illustrations! If you’re not an artist yourself, this is where you’ll want to call in a pro.
