Human-manipulated ecosystems (including agricultural areas) now cover 37% of the land surface of the world. Although not generally regarded as a biome, we cannot ignore the ecology of these areas.
Ecoregions are geographically distinct areas of land, characterized by distinctive climates, ecological features, and plant and animal communities. Ohio is covered by three broad ecoregions and two of these are further subdivided. Each has its own distinctive characteristics, which are most obvious in regards to the plant communities.
Erie Lake Plain. Edge of very low-relief (10’) Ice-Age lake basin separated from modern Lake Erie by shoreline cliffs; major streams in deep gorges; elevation 570’-800’. Pleistocene-age lacustrine sand, silt, clay, and wave-planed till over Devonian- and Mississippian-age shales and sandstones.
