Needless to say, Jeremiah lived through a tumultuous time in world history. He begins prophesying during the rule of Josiah, King of Judea, when the people of Israel were caught in the middle of a struggle among the major world powers- Assyria, Egypt, and Babylonia (Judea essentially formed the buffer zone between the three empires).
