      Mars robotic rover

      • Spirit, also known as MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover – A) or MER-2, is a Mars robotic rover, active from 2004 to 2010. Spirit was operational on Mars for 2208 sols or 3.3 Martian years (2269 days; 6 years, 77 days). It was one of two rovers of NASA 's Mars Exploration Rover Mission managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Jun 10, 2003 · What was Spirit? NASA's Spirit rover—and it's twin Opportunity—studied the history of climate and water at sites on Mars where conditions may once have been favorable to life. Spirit uncovered strong evidence that Mars was once much wetter than it is now.

  3. May 25, 2011 · What Spirit has told us, is that Mars was at one time like the Earth, some three-and-a-half to four billion years ago. There was liquid water on the surface, there was a thicker atmosphere, there were warmer temperatures.

  4. Sep 22, 2018 · Holenmerism claims spirits do exist in space, yet in a very different way to bodies. Consider a particular body, a tree. Its parts are ‘spread out’ through space: the roots are under the ground, the trunk emerges in one place, and its leaves are spread through different places in the air.

  5. Mar 16, 2022 · Spirit had explored Mars for over 6 Earth-years, or 2,210 Martian days, known as “sols.” To honor its fallen twin, the location where Opportunity was exploring was named “Spirit Point.” Opportunity then continued on, racking up the mileage.

Spirit is one of a suite of spacecraft in NASA's second wave of Mars exploration. The agency sent several missions to Mars in the 1960s and 1970s but paused after the Viking 1 and Viking 2landers did not bring back definitive evidence of current or past life. According to the agency, interest in Mars was rekindled in the 1980s and 1990sas researche...

It took two years of negotiating for scientists and engineers to agree on landing sites for Opportunity and Spirit. "The places most appealing to scientists (the side of a cliff, for example, on which the planet's history is recorded in layers of sedimentary rock) are often the most frightening to engineers charged with the robot's safety," NASA wr...

Spirit was still sitting in its landing shell when it spotted the first possible sign of water in the distance: carbonate, which often forms in wet environments. "We came looking for carbonates," Phil Christensen, one of the scientists for the mission, said in a statement. "We have them. We're going to chase them." But within a week, Spirit was in ...

Despite mechanical and Martian challenges, Spirit journeyed 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) during its years on Mars — more than a dozen times the distance that NASA planned for the rover to travel. In fact, the malfunctioning wheel ended up being useful to the mission: In March 2007, NASA announcedthat the rover had churned up soil with sulfur and wate...

While Spirit stopped communications with Earth in 2010, its twin rover, Opportunity, went far beyond that. Opportunity continued operating well into 2018 — roughly 14.5 years after its landing date — but was stalled on the surface due to a dust stormin June 2018. Both Opportunity and Spirit loom large in NASA lore. Both rovers showed the world how ...

  6. Feb 13, 2019 · Spirit and Opportunity landed a few weeks apart, in different Red Planet locales. But they shared a main mission goal: to hunt for signs of long-ago liquid-water activity, thereby...

  7. Spirit (and its twin, Opportunity) are six-wheeled, solar-powered robots standing 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) high, 2.3 meters (7.5 ft) wide and 1.6 meters (5.2 ft) long and weighing 180 kilograms (400 lb). Six wheels on a rocker-bogie system enabled mobility over rough terrain.
