The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church is a document issued by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in 2004 to offer "a complete overview of the fundamental framework of the doctrinal corpus of Catholic social teaching".
The compendium is divided into three parts, examining the foundations, contents and pastoral perspectives of Catholic social doctrine. First published in October of 2004 in Rome, this valuable resource can be ordered through the USCCB publishing office for $29.95 by calling 1-800-235-8722.
Faith and reason represent the two cognitive paths of the Church's social doctrine: Revelation and human nature. The “knowing” of faith understands and directs the life of men and women according to the light of the historical-salvific mystery, God's revelation and gift of himself to us in Christ.
The principles of the Church's social doctrine, which are based on the natural law, are then seen to be confirmed and strengthened, in the faith of the Church, by the Gospel of Christ.
Social doctrine is theological and has its foundation in biblical revelation and the tradition of the Church (Nos. 72-4). In this sense, faith interacts with reason in a process in which "the Mystery of Christ illuminates the mystery of man" (No. 75).
