The Kingdom of Bavaria ( German: Königreich Bayern; Bavarian: Kinereich Bayern; spelled Baiern until 1825) was a German state that succeeded the former Electorate of Bavaria in 1806 and continued to exist until 1918.

The unification of Germany in 1871 was a major event in European history that had far-reaching consequences for the rest of the continent. One key player in this unification was the state of Bavaria, which joined with Prussia to form the German Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm I.
Becoming the king of Bavaria in 825, Louis the German gradually extended his power over all of Carolingian Germany. Louis the German’s rise to power, however, was not a smooth one, because internal turmoil plagued the Carolingian empire in the 830s and early 840s.
When Napoleon overran Europe, Bavaria at first sided with the French, and Napoleon made Bavaria a kingdom in 1805. In the war between Prussia and Austria in 1866, Bavaria aided Austria. Even after Bavaria became part of the new German Empire in 1871, it remained a kingdom and kept its own army and postal system, its own laws and customs.
