Kathleen Sebelius (/ s ɪ ˈ b iː l i ə s /; née Gilligan, born May 15, 1948) is an American politician who served as the 21st United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2009 until 2014. As Secretary of Health and Human Services, Sebelius was instrumental in overseeing the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Obama chose her as secretary of Health and Human Services after his first choice, Thomas Daschle, stepped down because of unpaid taxes. Sebelius was sworn in on April 29, 2009. With President Barack Obama hoping to overhaul the country's health care system, Sebelius was expected to play a role in its legislative proposal and implementation.
