May 1, 2024 · Mt. Whitney Trailhead Campground. Area Status: Open. Located in the "Ravine" on the east side of the overflow parking lot at Whitney Portal, all campsites are walk-in . Camping is not allowed in the parking lot. Sites have flat tent pads and bear proof food lockers. Restrooms are located at the parking lot.

If you are coming from the North on Highway 395 you could use the Onion Valley area at 9,200 feet, or even further to the north, is the North Lake parking area out of Bishop at 9,500 feet. Campers, Motor Homes, Travel Trailers and other types of specialty overnight setups are not allowed in the Portal parking area.

They sell breakfast food at the portal, and also have a spot to weigh your bag and take a picture. We found parking, took pre-hike photos and then started our hike around 6:30 am.
Jul 17, 2014 · I concur with sleeping at 8,000 to acclimate, or consider Horseshoe Meadows/Cottonwood Pass Trailhead if you can sleep well at 10,000. If you can back in to a good spot at the Portal, it's not bad. Just show up, keep your options open, ask around, and things will work out fine - probably better than you hoped for.
