  1. My Life By Mary J. Blige. If you ask people who the Queen of R&B is, many of them will name Mary J. Blige, and this album adds to why they think that. The follow-up to her 1992 album, My Life peaked in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best R&B Album.

    • Nikkole – Vulnerable (LA International Records) The album opens up with the very powerful R&B Pop oriented title track “Vulnerable,” which immediately sets the stage for the overall feel of this Goldmine Magazine / TONE Scott choice for 2022’s Soul/R&B album of the year.
    • Amber Mark – Three Dimensions Deep (PMR Records/ Interscope/ EMI) The next (and last) two recording artists, inducted into the Goldmine Magazine/ TONE Scott Top 10 Soul and R&B albums of 2022 list, must have not gotten the message that it is not protocol anymore to include twice as many songs as normal on a full length studio album (that trend went out in the early 2000's).
    • Anthony Hamilton – Love is the New Black (My Music Box / BMG) Technically, this album (his first full-length in five years) was released to retail at the very end of September, 2021, but only as a digital file, and as well, on compact disc album.
    • Eric Roberson – Lessons (Blue Erro Soul) If Kendra Morris is the most underrated female recording artist on our list, then Eric Roberson is the male equivalent, as the most underrated, under-acknowledged male recording artist on our 'best of' list for this year.
    • Trouble Is. (Soul Step Records) Having had the chance to thoroughly review this album, and having kept it (uncontrollably) on perpetual play ever since, I was confident that when considerations for Goldmine's 2023 Top 10 Soul and R&B albums of the Year began, this was going to fall inline as a major contender.
    • Wait Til I Get Over. (Dead Oceans) When marketing campaigns began to manifest, pre-release, I could not help but wonder if this was going to be a continuation of the previous Durand Jones & The Indications material.
    • Changing Light. (Colemine Records) Barry White, eat your heart out! I don't quite remember if I made that exact exclamation in our feature review of The Ironsides first full-length album, Changing Light, earlier this year, but if I didn't write it, I was sure thinking it.
    • Come Around And Love Me. (Daptone Records) The most unique voice gracing this years Top 10 Soul and R&B album list, belongs to this United States native, now residing in Liverpool, UK, who has blessed the fantabulous Daptone Records with his musical gift.
    • Ian Mccann
    • Otis Redding: ‘Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul’ (1965) Otis Redding made other great albums, Sings Soul Ballads and Dictionary Of Soul among them, but Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul surpasses them all and tops our list of the best soul albums of all time.
    • Aretha Franklin: ‘I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You’ (1967) One of the best female soul singers[link to best female soul singers when live] in history, Aretha Franklin got it utterly right first time out… Well, more like tenth.
    • James Brown: ‘Live At The Apollo’ (1963) In the early 60s, James Brown was tearing up venues night after night, becoming the biggest star in Black America.
    • Marvin Gaye: ‘What’s Going On’ (1971) What’s Going On was Marvin Gaye’s bid for freedom – musical, emotional and political. A major chart act in the mid-60s, he was singing other people’s material despite his proven authorial skills.
    • Boyz II Men, II (1994) If Cooleyhighharmony made Boyz II Men stars, II made them legends. The singles were anchored to the top of the Billboard charts seemingly for eternity; the album cuts themselves were masterful.
    • Mary J. Blige, My Life (1994) My Life is one of the most iconic albums in R&B history, THE signature album of Mary J’s career and a blueprint for womanhood in the 90s.
    • Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) The tricky thing about this album is that one side swears it’s a hip-hop album, while another is determined to call it an R&B album.
    • Toni Braxton (1993) Toni had the weight of the world on her shoulders following her head-turning appearances on the 1992 Boomerang soundtrack. The bar had been raised impossibly high — and Toni hurdled it with ease.
  2. Featuring the best of R&B and Soul in 2022 – R&B albums from Steve Lacy, Robert Glasper, Ari Lennox, Ravyn Lenae and many more underground gems. The R&B genre has been living its best life this year.
