Horst P. Horst (born Horst Paul Albert Bormann; August 14, 1906 – November 18, 1999) was a German-American fashion photographer. [1] Early life. The younger of the sons, Horst was born in Weissenfels-an-der-Saale, Germany, to Klara (Schönbrodt) and Max Bohrmann. His father was a successful merchant.
Born in Germany as Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann, Horst studied design and carpentry under the tuition of Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus School, before moving to Paris to work as an apprentice to architect Le Corbusier. In Paris, he met George Hoyningen-Huene, star photographer at French Vogue.
He published several books of his photographs, including Photographs of a Decade (1945), Patterns from Nature (1946) and Salute to the Thirties, with George Hoyningen-Huene (1971).
Horst P. Horst was one of the original pioneers of 20 th Century fashion photography. His signature style is today instantly recognisable – combining portraiture and fashion with simple but essential embellishments.
Nov 18, 1999 · In 1946 Horst produced a book, Patterns from Nature, which featured close-up, black and white images of plants, rocks, and shells. This was a personal project and was inspired by the plant photography of Karl Blossfeldt, along with the wider New Objectivity movement of the 1920s and 30s.
