She was their fifth child and her elder brother Charles, the future Holy Roman Emperor, was the centre of their world. A sixth child – a daughter, named Catherine – would complete the family.

Margaret's brother, Philip the Fair, was two years older. In 1482, their mother died from a riding accident. The tragedy touched off a dynastic crisis for Maximilian.
