During preproduction, Raimi wanted two villains, Harry Osborn and Sandman. At the request of producer Avi Arad, he added Venom to the list, and the producers also requested the addition of Gwen Stacy.
Only outside of the mainstream Spider-Man comics or in other media is there other Spider-Man villains (that isn't named Mac Gargan) that are antagonists of Spider-Man. Gargan is the third character to assume the Scorpion alias in comics, but he became the most notable one, and is only one to be a recurring adversary of Spider-Man.

- Norman Osborn / Green Goblin. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man wasted little time in having Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) face off with his greatest enemy, the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe).
- Dr. Otto Octavius / Doc Ock. Spider-Man 2 is considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time, and Alfred Molina's performance as Doc Ock is a huge part of its appeal.
