Mar 30, 2024 · The world-famous Harlem Gospel Choir often performs at the Blue Note Jazz Club in the heart of Harlem, New York City. While Harlem is famous for its jazz heritage, gospel choirs are equally celebrated for keeping this musical tradition alive.
In each of them there is a suggestion of the architecture of French chateaux, complementing the more strictly ecclesiastical French Gothic of the church itself. The whole complex is effectively united by a cloister which enables one to walk from one end to the other without going outside.
The east end held the altar and choir, or quire, which were used by the clergy during daily masses. The nave was accessible to the lay community. Although medieval British churches are basically oriented east to west, they all vary slightly. When a new church was to be built, the patron saint was selected and the altar location laid out.
By 1846 both New York City and Trinity Church already had long, rich histories. The Gothic Revival church at Broadway and Wall Street was the congregation’s third home. The Anglican parish, chartered by King William III in 1697, was set within a large parcel of land—the largest in Manhattan—granted to it by the British Crown.
