a. Father of mercies and God of all comfort: Paul opens this letter by praising the God who gives so much mercy and comfort to the apostle and all believers. We get the feeling that Paul knows the mercy and comfort of God on a first-hand basis. i. The words all comfort in this passage come from the ancient Greek word paraklesis.
