Note: Full spoilers for the entire season follow.

After the last few seasons of 24 found the show peppered with inspired bits of action but largely running on fumes, everyone walked away with the general consensus that Jack Bauer would return. When or how was anyone’s guess, and talks of a possible movie floated around in the years that followed. But what was finally decided on was a 12-episode limited series that would still cover 24 hours, set in London. Whatever it was—the long break, the shortened schedule, the location or, most likely, a little bit of everything—this latest season, pitched as 24: Live Another Day, more than lived up to expectations.

Having last seen Jack walking off into the shadows as an accused traitor and all-around hated guy, this season picks up four years later in London and we quickly find that those years have not been kind to both Jack and Chloe. Each of them have been broken in different ways — Chloe’s tragically lost her family and fallen in with some tragically hip, self-righteous hackers calling themselves Open Cell. Oh, and when we first see her she’s being tortured by the CIA. So, yeah, she’s in a bad place. Meanwhile Jack seems to have done everything in his power to just stop being human. When asked by Belcheck why he doesn’t simply ask his friend Chloe for help, Jack matter-of-factly replies that he doesn’t have any friends. Ouch.

It’s this careful attention to its lead characters that makes 24 much more than just an effective thriller. With the opening episodes laying out how damaged Jack and Chloe are, the finale manages to make the exchange with the Russians in the closing minutes a moment of triumph rather than defeat. Jack’s no longer the robot he was 24 hours earlier, instead he’s got a dear friend that he’s managed to save and insured that his estranged family will be looked in on. That closing scene felt earned because the creative team had taken the time, bit by bit over this season, to show both of them thawing and changing.

My guess is that this won’t be the last we see of these characters, but if it is, it was a spectacular victory lap for a landmark series. Cutting the episodes down to 12 drastically cut the fat from the usual season of 24. The creative team never let up, switching gears throughout, from quiet intensity to blown-out action sequences. But what held i...
