  1. May 12, 2017 · It's an R-rated movie that has the bright colors of one that's made for kids, and that's perfect for Jones' humor. Just as well, there’s a darkness within the silly atmosphere and a fitfully messy morality. “Absolute power doesn’t corrupt,” Neil says in one of the script’s numerous pointed lines. “It just drives you bloody mad!”.

  3. Our review: Parents say ( 1 ): Kids say ( 7 ): Aside from a couple of silly sight gags and the novelty of hearing Williams' voice one last time, there's little to recommend this British comedy. The Monty Python alums are a legendary bunch, but Absolutely Anything just isn't funny fare, even with all of their talent.

  4. Absolutely Anything is a good idea but is executed poorly, with a lame take-home message about great power demanding great responsibility. Full Review | May 8, 2017.

You probably liked Absolutely Anything better when it was called Bruce Almighty. The film combines the comedic talents of Simon Pegg, Robin Williams and the Monty Python team, but in telling a tale that’s incredibly similar to the 2003 movie in which Jim Carrey was granted God-like powers, it invites comparisons that aren’t flattering.

The central conceit is exactly the same, though here rather than the actual God making a man god-like, it’s a group of malevolent aliens doing the bestowing.

Calling themselves the ‘Intergalactic Council of Superior Beings’ and voiced by Pythons John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and the film’s co-writer and director Terry Jones, the aliens have decided to terminate Earth, but before their ‘Destruction Order’ can be carried out, they must enact due legal process.

They do this by choosing an earthling at random, giving them supreme power, and if said person proves their worth, leaving the planet be.

Terry Jones could have done absolutely anything with this high-concept set-up but chose to go down the romantic comedy route. Which would be fine if the jokes were better, but they aren't. The result is a loosely knitted together series of vignettes, some of which raise titters, but the majority of which elicit groans.

  5. May 12, 2017 · Absolutely Anything: Directed by Terry Jones. With Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Rob Riggle. A group of eccentric aliens confers a human being with the power to do absolutely anything, as an experiment.

  6. Aug 12, 2015 · Film Review: ‘Absolutely Anything’ Decades in the making, Monty Python vet Terry Jones' lame sci-fi satire squanders the contributions of top comic talents — including the late Robin Williams.
