Alcatraz Island is accessible by ferry only: these depart regularly from Pier 33, on the Embarcadero. The tram stops a few hundred metre away (The Embarcadero & Greenwich St) and bus routes 27, 54 and 72 also stop very close by. Although Alcatraz was able to house 450 convicts in cells that measured about 10 feet by 4.5 feet (3 metres by 1.5 metres), no more than 250 prisoners ever occupied the island at one time. Escape attempts were rare, and most escapees relied on secrecy and subterfuge to reach the perceived freedom of the waters of San Francisco Bay.
The Ohlone indigenous people occupied much of the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 10,000 years before Europeans arrived. Evidence shows that Alcatraz Island was not only an important transport hub for them, but it was also a food gathering site. Eggs from large waterfowl were collected on the island and fishing off its shores was common.
