Nov 3, 2016 · Though always devoted to sculpture, Archipenko played with the boundaries of mediums throughout his career, devising dimensional painted reliefs, such as Glass on a Table (1920), that he called “sculpto-paintings.” Archipenko was born in Kyiv, at the time part of the Russian Empire, in 1887.

  6. Archipenko created some of the earliest multimedia sculptures, working with glass, wire, and wood, and was one of the first modern artists to add color to sculpted form. In 1923, Archipenko moved to the United States, where he opened art schools in New York City and Woodstock and taught in universities across the country.
