Antoine-Jean Gros (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃twanʒɑ̃ gʁo]; 16 March 1771 – 25 June 1835) was a French painter of historical subjects. He was granted the title of Baron Gros in 1824. Gros studied under Jacques-Louis David in Paris and began an independent artistic career during the French Revolution.
The son of parents who were both painters of miniature portraits, Antoine-Jean Gros was born in Paris in 1771. At the age of fifteen he became one of the first pupils of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) on the latter's return from Italy after his completion of the Oath of the Horatii.
Antoine-Jean Gros, French Romantic painter principally remembered for his historical pictures depicting significant events in the military career of Napoleon. The elegance, richness, and dramatic power of these works influenced other painters, including Eugene Delacroix.

Leading the Revival of Realism. GROS, ANTOINE JEAN, BARON (1771—1835), French painter, was born at Paris in 1771. His father, who was a miniature painter, began to teach him to draw at the age of six, and showed himself from the first an exacting master.
In his most dramatic drawings, executed in pen and ink, Gros’s free, impetuous style and liberal use of wash accentuate the strength and originality of his art, which led Delacroix to single the artist out from David’s other pupils and consider him the first painter of the new school.
