A ballade is a form of verse that uses poetic turns of phrase to form a compelling narrative over the course of its four stanzas, which follow an established rhyming pattern.
What Is the Format of a Ballad? The ballad is divided into stanzas, each with four lines, which is also known as a quatrain. The rhyme scheme can be ABAB or ABCB, which means that the second and fourth lines always rhyme together. The first and third line of the stanza comes in iambic tetrameter.
In the English tradition, it usually follows a form of rhymed (abcb) quatrains alternating four-stress and three-stress lines. Folk (or traditional) ballads are anonymous and recount tragic, comic, or heroic stories with emphasis on a central dramatic event; examples include “Barbara Allen” and “John Henry.”.
