Coordinates: 50°27′30″N 02°47′39″E. The Battle of Loos took place from 25 September to 8 October 1915 in France on the Western Front, during the First World War. It was the biggest British attack of 1915, the first time that the British used poison gas and the first mass engagement of New Army units.

The Artois campaigns comprised the major Allied offensive on the Western Front in 1915. Along with the attack against Loos by the British, French troops launched offensives at Champagne (the Second Battle of Champagne), and at Vimy Ridge in Arras.
The British forces broke through the German position at Loos, but were pushed back to their starting positions. There were 50,000 British casualties. Lance Corporal Budge survived the war and immigrated to the United States.
The ̋Batle of Loos ̋ was fought by the forces of the British Empire in the mining basin, in support of the French army who were in Souchez and on the Vimy Ridge. The front line was around 15km long and stretched from La Bassée in Lens via the communes of Auchy-les-Mines, Haisnes, Vermelles, Hulluch and Loos-en-Gohelle.
