At age 17, Ward, already an art hobbyist, began his professional career by illustrating "beer jackets", a type of white denim jacket with text or design printed or drawn on the back; Ward charged one dollar a jacket, and by his own count drew hundreds during that summer.
Culling through thousands of images, editor Alex Chun has selected the best of Ward’s Conte crayon pin-ups, including many of his infamous telephone girls, many of which have not seen print in almost half a century.

(6 March 1919 - 17 November 1998, USA) 'Torchy'. Bill Ward was an acclaimed "good girl" comic artist and cartoonist. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey. After his education at the Pratt Institute, he got a job with an ad agency in 1941.
