During a particularly intense, humid Florida heatwave, inept and disreputable lawyer Ned Racine ( William Hurt) meets Matty Walker ( Kathleen Turner ). Matty is married but her wealthy husband Edmund Walker ( Richard Crenna) is frequently away on business. Racine and Matty begin an affair.
