On December 22, before a crowd of over 100,000, the gate officially reopened as West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl walked through to embrace East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow [16].
With the construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961, the monument led a lonely existence because it was henceforth in the restricted area and could be visited neither by East Berliners nor by people from the West. With the fall of the Wall in 1989, the Brandenburg Gate became a symbol of reunification.
The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most iconic sights in today’s vibrant Berlin. More than just Berlin’s only surviving historical city gate, this site came to symbolise Berlin’s Cold War division into East and West – and, since the fall of the Wall, a reunified Germany.
