Jan 14, 2023 · The Cathedral of Conversano was made in the medieval age and today it is the seat of the diocese of Conversano-Monopoli, in Apulia. This beautiful religious structure in Apulian Romanesque style is located not far from the Castle, in Largo Cattedrale, and you absolutely can't miss this destination when visiting the historic center of the town.
Other landmarks include the megalithic walls (6th century BC) erected by the Pelasgi, the Baroque church of SS. Cosma e Damiano, the church of St. Francis (1289), and, 1 km outside the city, the church of St. Catherine (c. 12th century).
The church itself is a beautiful small church with a distinct bell tower covered in gold and blue plates. The nuns built the bell tower higher than the cathedral tower to demonstrate their superiority. There is a small archeological museum with Greek era artifacts in the grounds.

The devotional and funerary setting created between 1508 and 1528 by the count Andrea Matteo Acquaviva and his wife Caterina della Ratta in the Church of Santa Maria dell’Isola near Conversano is the one surviving example of a series of scenographic displays that existed in Renaissance Apulia.
Most likely in front of the Church of St. Benedict or the Church of Saint Rita, Cosma and Damian. The sober exterior facade of the Church of Saint Rita, Cosma and Damian is a true jewel of the Baroque of Bari and inside it preserves extraordinary iconographic images that cover almost every corner of the walls, signed by Paul Finoglio.
There are also several interesting churches and building exteriors, old town gateways, an arty ‘quarter’ and picturesque lanes to explore. Although this may sound like a lot, the museums are housed in the castle and monastery and are small. This is a very manageable, relaxed destination to explore.
