They adopted a three-year-old boy, Clarence, whose mother, Armstrong's cousin Flora, had died soon after giving birth. Clarence Armstrong was mentally disabled as a result of a head injury at an early age, and Armstrong spent the rest of his life taking care of him. His marriage to Parker ended when they separated in 1923.

Louis Armstrong. (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971) Louis Armstrong was born in a poor section of New Orleans on August 4, 1901. He was raised primarily by his mother and attended the Fisk School for Boys where he was first exposed to music before he dropped out at age 11 to join a quartet of boys who sang on street corners for money.
