  1. Commander Hamilton McWhorter III (February 8, 1921 – April 12, 2008) was a United States Navy aviator and a flying ace of World War II, credited with shooting down twelve Japanese aircraft. He was the first Hellcat ace, first USN carrier-based double ace, [2] [3] and the first Grumman F6F Hellcat pilot to achieve double ace status.

Cmdr Mac McWhorter was born in Athens, Georgia to Hamilton McWhorter Jr. and Nettie Lou Peurifoy McWhorter. He married his wife Louise in 1943. Cmdr McWhorter was a naval aviation cadet undergoing training when Pearl Harbor was attacked in December 1941.

  3. In 1944, he joined Fighting Squadron 12 (VF-12) aboard the USS Randolph and participated in the initial strikes against Tokyo and in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings. McWhorter remained in the military after the war, serving aboard several carriers and commanding VF-12. He retired in 1969 as a commander and passed away in 2008.
