Aug 23, 2023 · The riff in rock music is often defined by the subgenre in question. The opening lead line of a melodic ballad often serves as an anchor. In punk rock though, the rhythm itself is what the melody is to a rock ballad song. Play a sequence of a few power chords and you got yourself a base for good punk rock riffs.
All in all, a riff can be defined a catchy part of a song that is meant to be remembered. In other words, a riff is just a hook. While a riff can technically be any memorable section of a song played on any instrument, the term is mostly used to refer to those played on a guitar.
