On June 16, 1931, at the Chicago Federal Building in the courtroom of Wilkerson, Capone pleaded guilty to income tax evasion and the 5,000 Volstead Act violations as part of a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-year prison sentence plea bargain.
Capone was convicted, and on October 24, 1931, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. When he finally got out of Alcatraz, Capone was too sick to carry on his life of crime. He died in 1947.

Per the Associated Press, media reports from the time claimed the kingpin's cell contained "richly colored oriental rugs, polished wood furniture, and other trappings," making him feel far from trapped.
