Von Trips participated in 29 Formula One World Championship Grand Prix races, debuting on 2 September 1956. He won two races, secured one pole position , achieved six podiums, and scored a total of 56 championship points.
He also won the non-championship races at Syracuse and Solitude for Ferrari and finished second in the F2 German GP for Porsche. On his way to winning the Dutch Grand Prix in 1961 in the Ferrari 156. Then in 1961 he hit top form.
For 1961 Ferrari aced the new 1.5-litre engine rules and Von Trips was thrust into a world championship showdown with team mate Phil Hill. Two wins and two second places strengthened his cause and he arrived at the penultimate round at Monza in strong shape.
He won 2 Grand Prix and claimed 1 pole position during his career but, as he stood on the brink of winning the drivers championship in 1961, he was tragically killed in a horrific crash at the Italian Grand Prix, which also claimed the lives of 15 spectators.
