Dr. Michael Gottlieb, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA, was the principal investigator on the CDC’s 1981 report describing what would eventually become known as AIDS.
AIDS loomed as a threat to the well-being of the hospital and Gottlieb, so publicly and professionally identified with the disease, was becoming a nuisance. Despite or perhaps because of his fame, Gottlieb was denied tenure at UCLA and went into private practice in 1987.
