Jul 10, 1998 · In "Drifting Clouds," a woman loses her job at a bankrupt restaurant, her husband is laid off by the transport system, their TV is repossessed, she pays her savings to an employment agency for another job, she isn't paid, and when her husband tries to collect he gets beaten up.
In addition to achieving a paradoxical balance of mirth and melancholy, Drifting Clouds is a dark, mostly interior movie with a color scheme as big as all outdoors. Full Review | May 23, 2003....

Drifting Clouds is about some familiar Kaurismäki subjects: work, unemployment, and a small, self-run business. The main characters are a married couple, Ilona and Lauri, played by two of Kaurismäki’s doe-eyed, heavy-set, resolutely unglamorous regulars, Kati Outinen and Kari Väänänen.

An early gem from Finnish maestro Aki Kaurismäki, Drifting Clouds is a deceptively simple story. The aftermath of job losses for wife Ilona (Kati Outinen) and husband Lauri (Kari Väänänen) holds a series of misfortunes, all of them tests to their marital bond.
