What does an eGFR test result mean? An eGFR below 60 for three months or more, or an eGFR above 60 with kidney damage (marked by high levels of albumin in your urine) means chronic kidney disease. Estimated GFR (eGFR) is a key method for identifying people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). eGFR calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation or the CKD-EPI equation provides a more clinically useful measure of kidney function than serum* creatinine alone.
What do the results mean? Your eGFR results may be reported as a number that shows how much blood your kidneys filter per minute. Your test results may also give your creatinine level and/or your cystatin C level. Ask your provider to explain what your eGFR says about your kidney health.
