The Capela dos Ossos (English: Chapel of Bones) is one of the best-known monuments in Évora, Portugal. It is a small interior chapel located next to the entrance of the Church of St. Francis . The Chapel gets its name because the interior walls are covered and decorated with human skulls and bones.

Sep 9, 2022 · 2022-09-09. Portugal. This is my guide to visiting the Chapel of Bones Evora , (the Capela dos Ossos) one of the most unusual things to see in Portugal. It’s a chapel decorated entirely with human bones, including skulls, tibias and femurs. It’s attached to the much more cheery Church of São Francisco in the historic heart of Evora.
Rows of skulls, cornices and white naves ornament the arcades. In total, there are around 5000 human skulls in Bones Chapel, among numerous bones. They all came from graves in the convent church and from other churches and cemeteries in Evora. “We bones that are here, for yours we wait”.
