Floyd Hilston, a clown at Owen Gillman's circus, is devoted to "Fearless Fagan," a lion he has raised since Fagan was four days old. Through Floyd's gentle care, Fagan behaves more like a pet than a wild animal, much to the chagrin of lion tamer Emil Tauchnitz, who beratees Floyd for his naïvité.

MG.M.’s Fearless Fagan sought the distinction of being a comedy based (albeit loosely) on a real-life situation. Writer Eldon Griffith’s article about Private Floyd C. Humeston, the reluctant soldier who brought his pet lion (Fagan) along when he was inducted into the United States Army, had appeared in LIFE magazine in 1951.
Fearless Fagan is a story based on a real life lion and his best human friend. Carleton Carpenter plays the human friend and while he's not an animal trainer per se, he and Fagan the lion have worked out a marvelous circus act for themselves.
