Jul 30, 2017 · Here is a cross reference chart: Light = SAE 20. Medium = SAE 30. Heavy = SAE 40. So we know definitively that Ford specified SAE 20 when your Model T was new. Back in those days there was no such thing as detergent oil, and multi – viscosity oil was also decades in the future.

Nov 27, 2022 · The Model T Ford transmission works like this: the engine flywheel drives (or rotates) three planetary gears mounted on it. Each of these three planetary gears has three rings of different gears on it. The front one is meshed with (or geared to) a driven sun gear. This drives the Brake drum and also the rear wheels (see modeltcentral.com ).
In the illustration above #1 points at the upper petcock on the engine / transmission pan. The red in the picture denotes the oil in the engine pan. To check the oil in your Model T the car should be parked in a level place for at least 30 minutes. Open the upper petcock. Remove the oil filler cap.
