Gelsenkirchen is a city of 260,000 people (2019) at the Ruhr region in the western part of the country, near major cities such as Düsseldorf and Cologne. Through coal mining, the Ruhr Region became the industrial heart of Germany and formed heavily populated cities.
Gelsenkirchen (UK: /ˈɡɛlzənkɪərxən/, US: /ˌɡɛlzənˈkɪərxən/, German: [ˌɡɛlzn̩ˈkɪʁçn̩]; Westphalian: Gelsenkiärken) is a city in Germany in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is about 63 kilometres (39.1 miles) north of Cologne in the so-called Ruhr Area. About 269,000 people live there.
