Gerard Schurmann (19 January 1924 – 24 March 2020) was a Dutch-born British composer and conductor. He lived in the United States from 1981 until his death. He composed music for many film soundtracks. Schurmann was also the orchestrator for the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia.
Nov 3, 2008 · Paintings with the suffix ‘D’ in the catalogue (for example 67-15D) are destroyed. Two of these are paintings which had been sold and were destroyed in accidents while in private ownership; a third was damaged beyond restoration when it fell into Tokyo Dock.

In 1969 Bacon returned the compliment by painting a striking portrait of the composer, Study of Gerard Schurmann, a reproduction of which adorns the published Novello score of the work. The original is in the composer’s private collection.
As vital an expression of the composer’s art as his large-scale statements, they impart Schurmann’s love of Blake as authentically as his orchestral Studies reveal his passion for Bacon’s paintings.
